Trudeau Pretends To Be Tough With His Chinese Communist Party Overlords I

Trudeau’s normally ‘China-friendly’ Canadian government has taken action against foreign interference in its internal affairs by expelling Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei, who was allegedly involved in a plot to intimidate Conservative MP Michael Chong and his family members in Hong Kong. The government’s decision came after Canada’s spy agency reported the Chinese government’s attempts to intimidate Chong over his support for labelling Beijing’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims as genocide. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly emphasised that Canada will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in its internal affairs and that diplomats engaging in such behaviour will be sent home. Canada has an incredibly positive and some would say overly tolerant relationship with communist China, so this seems strange for the Trudeau government to come down so hard on their Chinese associates. Maybe this is all a smoke screen, so Trudeau can be seen to be ‘acting tough’ on any country that threatens Canadian democracy.

The decision to expel Zhao Wei was not taken lightly, and the government was warned of possible backlash from Beijing. However, Joly confirmed that Canada remains firm in its resolve to defend its democracy. The threats against Chong are the latest in a series of alleged foreign interference attempts made by the Chinese dictatorship on Canadian soil in recent years, including efforts to influence federal election results.
