Emerging Markets Veteran Investor Has Most Investments In Taiwan

According to Taiwan media reports on March 10th, a few days after claiming that mainland China restricted him from remitting funds, veteran investor Mark Mobius, known as the “Godfather of Emerging Markets”, said in an interview on Wednesday that most of his investment portfolio focus on Taiwan, especially the chip category. He said that Taiwan is their largest allocation. Mobius’ focus on Taiwan stems from his bullish outlook on the semiconductor sector, where Communist China and the United States are pouring huge sums of money into production and research. He told reporters that “The tech industry is number one for us, particularly anything related to semiconductors” , describing chips as the top category in his portfolio. The billionaire also warned others in an interview last week to be “very, very careful” about investing in the mainland, claiming that he could not remit his money out of mainland China from his HSBC account in Shanghai. He said the authorities did not explicitly prohibit the outflow of funds, but put in place many obstacles, and would say “give us all the records from 20 years of how you made this money”. Mobius’ simple comment is, “this is crazy”.
