Taiwan President Commemorates February 28 Incident and Stressed Human Rights Protection

It is reported that Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen delivered a speech commemorating the February 28 incident on the same day and stressed that letting Taiwanese live with dignity is the best way to commemorate the incident. Tsai Ing-wen said that Taiwanese should live with dignity for future generations. At the same time, she believes that letting the government know that the suffering predecessors sacrificed their lives to draw the bottom line of Taiwan’s social fairness, justice, democracy, and freedom, and pointed out that “we must never make the mistake again.” Between February 27th and May 16th, 1947, conflicts between officials and civilians broke out across Taiwan, and the people demanded political reform. The Kuomintang government at the time sent troops to suppress it, and then imposed martial law in Taiwan for a long time. Tsai Ing-wen stressed that people may have different historical evaluations of the February 28 incidents, but the government has the responsibility to stick to the democratic constitutional stance, comfort the suffering predecessors, and comfort the wounds of the victims’ families. Only by making the people aware of Taiwan’s past pain and mistakes and building a democratic consensus can we move toward a united future.
