In order to prevent the leakage of sensitive information, many states in the U.S. have banned TikTok, a short video platform owned by the Chinese Communist Party’s Byte Dance. With New Jersey and Ohio following on January 9th, it is estimated that at least 21 states have banned the use of TikTok on the devices of public institutions.
According to foreign media reports, there are more and more voices within the U.S. Government calling for a boycott of TikTok due to security concerns, and at least 22 states have imposed re-strictions on TikTok since 2020.
On the 9th, New Jersey and Ohio also announced that they would join other states in banning the use of TikTok on devices owned and managed by public authorities. New Jersey Governor Murphy, in addition to banning TikTok, also blocked more than ten com-munication software manufacturing supplies and service providers, including the CCP’s Huawei, Hikang vision, and Tencent. Ohio Governor Dewey noted that “these sneaky data privacy and cybersecurity practices pose a national, local security, and cybersecurity threat to users and de-vices that use the apps and platforms.”
