Taiwan Imposes Quarantine Measures on Mainland China Arrivals

After nearly two years of COVID-19 pandemic quarantine measures, Taiwan reopened to foreign visitors in October 2022 and ended the mandatory quarantine requirement. While the current CCP virus and vaccine disasters sweep across China, the CCP has announced that it is opening up outbound travel for Chinese citizens as of January 8th next year. Countries around the world fear a new wave of COVID outbreaks caused by the entry of Chinese tourists. After the United States, Japan, and Italy, Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center announced on December 28th that Taiwan will tighten quarantine on arrivals from mainland China starting January 1st, 2023. Taiwan officials said that all passengers from mainland China who fly directly to Taiwan, as well as those who come to Taiwan via the Kinmen and Matsu regions, or who come to Taiwan for the Chinese New Year Relative Reunion, must undergo saliva PCR testing upon arrival, and virus sequencing will be performed on positive tests in order to track new variants of the virus. In addition, those who test positive will be subject to “5+n” home quarantine or independent health management as required. The implementation of this response will continue until the end of January. However, people coming to Taiwan from Hong Kong or Macau will not be included.
