PLA’s Strike Drill Around Taiwan Criticized As Destabilizing The Region

U.S. President Joe Biden’s recent sign off on the National Defense Authorization Act, which contains provisions to further support Taiwan against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), makes the communist dictatorship furious. In response, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command issued a message on its Weibo saying that on December 25, the Command will organize joint combat readiness patrols and joint firepower “strike drills” in the sea and airspace around Taiwan. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense responded that Beijing’s move once again highlights its desire to resolve differences by force and undermine regional peace and stability. The U.S.-Taiwan cooperation is merit to freedom, openness, peace, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Taiwan will continue to strengthen its military capabilities in response to Beijing’s threats. The PLA’s “military intimidation” is clearly aimed at deterring Taiwanese psychologically and does not help its international image. In the face of escalating threats from Beijing, the Taiwanese government is also increasing its defense budget to improve its military strength. 2023 Taiwan’s overall defense budget amounts to NT$586.3 billion, approximately 2.4% of its GDP, an increase of 13.9% compared to 2022. The United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier, despite having no formal diplomatic relations with the Island. The U.S. National Defense Authorization Act includes a specific defense modernization program for Taiwan.
