CCP Sanctions on Two American Officials in Retaliation for U.S. Sanctions

On December 23, according to the order signed by Communist China Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Communist China Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued sanctions on historian Miles Yu and U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) Deputy Director Todd Stein, including freezing their assets in Communist China and prohibiting their activities in Communist China, business activities, as well as banning their family members from entering Communist China. The sanctions will take effect on the same day of the announcement. Previously, on December 9, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced the imposition of sanctions on Wu Yingjie, who served as Communist Party Secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Region from 2016 to 2021, and Zhang Hongbo, who has served as Director of the Tibet Public Security Bureau since 2018 for allegedly committing serious human rights violations in the Tibetan region. The sanctions order issued by the CCP’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a countermeasure to the U.S. sanctions against two CCP officials for human rights violations in Tibet. Miles Yu is a Chinese American scholar and military historian who is one of the key figures in Washington to formulate new policies against the Chinese Communist Party during the Trump administration; Todd Stein is a former US State Department official who is involved in US-China Tibet affairs, who currently serves as the Deputy Director of the US Congressional and Executive China Commission.
