It was reported on Dec 5th, the Japanese government has begun considering the possibility of specifying the establishment of a U.S.-driven missile control system in three defense-related documents, including the National Security Strategy. Specifically, the Japanese government is determined to acquire a counterattack capability to strike the missile sites of adversaries and intends to change its current air defense system focusing only on interception. The governmental officials said, Tokyo is considering the introduction of the Integrated Air and Missile Defense system promoted by Washington.
The case aims to set up a new missile defense system capable of both intercepting incoming missiles and launching the most appropriate strike on enemy’s bases through a command and control system.
As a concrete means of counter strike capability, the Self-Defense Forces is considering the purchase of US-made Tomahawk cruise missiles to facilitate its cooperation with the US military.
The discussion is being reoriented along the directions specified in the three defense-related documents scheduled to be revised in the middle of this month.
