China Unicom, Tencent to Set Up for Joint Venture

On October 27, the State Administration for Market Supervision of China disclosed that the state-owned telecommunications company China Unicom and Tencent Holdings have received regulatory approval to set up a joint venture company. It was reported by the Communist China media on November 2 that the news was spreading widely online, and China Unicom shares soared in Shanghai on the same day. It is reported that the joint venture company set up by Tencent and Unicom is described to focus on content delivery networks and edge computing, which is the use of augmented reality and machine learning to analyze bulk data. Tencent is a top-ranked Internet company in China, mainly engaged in games, social media platforms, cloud computing, and other terminal businesses. And China Unicom, as one of the three major network operators in China, mainly provides network infrastructure services.

The joint venture company was formed to focus on terminal customers for the purpose of reaching a seamless communication and Internet connection, implying that the CCP would further control the people through Information Technology Operations.
