Poyang Lake Entered Extremely Dry Water Level

It is reported on September 6th, Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Communist China, has set the earliest record for entering an extremely dry period, which will impact on the lives and production of residents along the lake.

As of 8:00, the water level of Xingzi Station was 7.99 meters, setting the earliest record for entering the extremely dry season since 1951, 85 days earlier than the last record on November 30th, 2019, 115 days earlier than the average records. The lake entered the dry season(below 12m) on August 6th and the little dry season(below 10m) on August 19th. According to forecast by the Meteorological Department of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, the average rainfall in Jiujiang in September was less than the same period of the previous year, and the drought is expected to continue.

The drought disaster has been affecting the agricultural production and more than one million people in 83 counties and cities in Jiangxi when Poyang entered the dry season in August. Jiangxi is one of the thirteen major grain-producing provinces in the country, of which around Poyang Lake is the key. The continuous drought must have a greater impact on the residents along the lake and the national food production.
