British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to Become Next PM After Named Conservative Leader

On September 5th local time, the Britain’s Conservative Party announced Liz Truss, foreign secretary, has been elected as the next leader of the party and the third female PM replacing Boris Johnson effective on September 6th.

Truss beat Rishi Sunak, former chancellor of the exchequer, with support of 57.4% of Conservative Party members, and become leader of the governing Conservative Party.

With a tough stance against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Truss has repeatedly called on Western countries to support Taiwan’s self-defense. In August, she summoned the Communist China’s ambassador to explain the action of Chinese military drills around Taiwan during the U.S. House Speaker’s Taiwan visit. She also said in an interview that UK will seek to strengthen alliances with freedom-loving democratic nations to challenge the influence of malign actors and totalitarian states.
