Royal Canadian Navy Not Involved in NATO Mission for First Time

It’s reported on Aug. 8th, in the circumstance of rapidly escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait, the Canadian navy will not be able to participate in either of the two NATO naval task forces operations due to the growing trade-offs that Canada is having to make with its navy.

Every year Canadian navy has deployed two Halifax-class frigates to Europe Waters since becoming the member of NATO Navy Force in 2014. But now both frigates have returned to port, and not involved the NATO Naval Patrol Missions responsible for defending against the Russian threats. However, two Kingston-class coastal frigates were sent as replacement for defense.

The Defense Staff Secretary said, the current tension in the Taiwan Strait region is escalating and the Royal Canadian Navy must therefore send these two ships. Although Canada has a total of 12 frigates, 3 frigates have been decommissioned and the rest are unable to maintain their military presence in Asian European and Arctic regions, due to their obsolete equipment and frequent maintenance.
