U.S. Continues to Oppose Unilateral Efforts to Change Status Quo

On the evening of August 2nd, the special flight taken by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport. Dressed in a pink suit, Pelosi and her entourage stepped off the plane to be greeted by Taiwanese officials and representatives of the American Institute in Taiwan who came to meet them. Shortly after the plane Pelosi was on landed, Pelosi’s official Twitter account released a statement “Statement from Pelosi and Congressional Delegation on Visit to Taiwan.”

The statement reads that the visit is the first official visit to Taiwan by a speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in 25 years. Our Congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan honored the strong commitment of the United States to support Taiwan’s vibrant democracy.

In a statement, “Our visit is part of our broader visit to the Indo-Pacific region, including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan, focused on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance,” it continued “Our discussions with Taiwanese leaders will focus on reaffirming our support for our partners and advancing our common interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific. America’s solidarity with Taiwan’s 23 million people is more important today than ever as the world faces authoritarianism and democracy.”

Pelosi noted that the visiting delegation was just one of the congressional delegations sent to Taiwan. She reiterated that the visit to Taiwan in no way contradicts longstanding U.S. policy guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the U.S.-China Joint Communique and the Six Assurances.

She stressed that the United States will continue to oppose any unilateral efforts to change the status quo.
