U.S. to Sends Four More HIMARS to Ukraine

The United States will send four more High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to Ukraine, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Wednesday, July 20th, in the latest military program supporting Kiev.

Earlier this week, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered generals to prioritize the destruction of Ukraine’s long-range missile and artillery weapons after weapons that were supplied by the West were used to strike Russian supply lines.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion nearly five months ago. Since then, Russian forces are moving through the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, occupying about a fifth of the country in total.

“(We) will keep finding innovative ways to sustain our long-term support for the brave men and women of Ukraine’s armed forces and we will adjust our assistance to ensure that Ukraine has the technology, ammunition and the sheer firepower to defend itself,” Austin said at a virtual meeting with Ukraine’s allies.

Ukraine says it has carried out successful strikes 30 Russian logistics and ammunitions hub through the use of several multiple-launch rocket systems recently provided by the West.

HIMARS have a longer range and are more precise than the Soviet-era artillery that Ukraine possesses.
