Blinken Urges Communist China to Comply with South China Sea Ruling and Cease Provocations

Secretary of State Blinken issued a statement through the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines on July 12th, the sixth anniversary of the South China Sea arbitral tribunal ruling, urging the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to comply with the ruling, abide by its obligations under international law, cease provocative behavior. Blinken also reiterated the America’s commitment to activate mutual defense if the Philippine Armed Forces are attacked in the South China Sea.

It is known that the Mutual Defense Treaty Between Philippines and the United States was signed in1951, aiming to build a U.S.-Philippines joint defense system to address the dangers in the Pacific area. In addition, on July 12th, 2016, the International Arbitral Tribunal in Hague issued an arbitration on the delimitation of the South China Sea, ruling in favor of the Philippines and rejecting the “nine-dash line” proposed by the CCP.
