Ukrainian armed forces are preparing to attack and retake the Kherson region, currently occupied by the Russians. On Sunday (July 10th), Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister urged local residents to evacuate immediately.
In the first weeks after Russia’s invasion, Ukraine lost most of its control of the Black Sea region of Kherson, including its Eponymous capital.
Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said on state television: ” It’s clear there will be fighting, there will be artillery shelling… and we therefore urge (people) to evacuate urgently.” Vereshchuk said she could not say exactly when the counter-offensive would start.
“I know for sure that there should not be women and children there, and that they should not become human shields,” Vereshchuk added.
The Kherson region includes the city of Kherson, which had a population of nearly 300,000 before the war, it is unclear how many of the city’s residents are still there.
