CCP and Russian Foreign Ministers Held Secret Talks Before G20

Despite international criticism of Russia’s attack on the Ukraine, Communist China remains friendly relations with Russia. Beijing refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, finding itself accused of providing diplomatic cover for the Kremlin. Beijing has criticized Western sanctions and arms sales to Kyiv.

At the end of their meeting in February, Putin and Xi Jinping announced a “new era” in international relations, saying there was “no upper limit” to relations between the two sides. Xi also assured Putin in a phone call last month that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) supports Russia’s “sovereignty and security.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Russian and Chinese Foreign Minister’s, Sergey Lavrov and Wang Yi met before the G20 meeting. Russia and CCP stressed “the need to maintain and develop G20.” The Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement that Lavrov briefed Wang Yi “the main task of carrying out special military operations is de-Nazification of the Ukraine.”

The United States quickly responded condemning Communist China for its “close relationship with a Russian investment cooperation.” Communist China claimed its neutral stand in the Russian-Ukrainian war. The CCP said Western countries are trying to isolate President Putin’s government from global financial markets and diplomatic order. The United States said Russia should no longer be a member of international forums. Several allies agree with the U.S. concerning Russia. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will persuade allies, including India who disagree with the U.S.’s stance on the Russian-Ukrainian war, in order to stay away from Moscow during G20 summit.
