Global Hunger Figures Increased to 828 Million in 2021, UN Says

A report released by the United Nations on Wednesday showed that between 702 million and 828 million people worldwide suffered from hunger last year. That’s at least 50 million more than the year before, Politico reported on July 6. The number of people who were food insecure, which means those who did not have regular access to the nutritious food needed to live a healthy life, rose to about 2.3 billion in 2021, 350 million more than before the COVID-19 pandemic breakout, the report said. Of these, nearly 924 million people are confronted with severe food insecurity.

The report was jointly produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Programme, UNICEF, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the World Health Organization.

David Beasley, chief of the World Food Programme warned that the surge in global food, fuel, and fertilizer prices due to the Ukraine crisis threatens to push countries around the world towards famine. The report calls on the world to take serious action to build resilience against future shocks.
