On June 28th, it is reported that Turkey, Finland, and Sweden sign agreement paving the way for Finnish and Swedish NATO membership. June 28th, A last minute agreement has been reached among Turkey, Finland, and Sweden allowing the two Nordic countries to become NATO members on the eve of the NATO’s summit in Madrid.
In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine started on February this year, the two Nordic nations gave up long time non-alignment neutrality policy and announced their applications to join NATO in May. Most of NATO memberships welcomed the application except Turkey vetoed, Turkey accused two countries of protecting militants from banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), and arms embargoes.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters on Wednesday (June 29th), he was working to add Finland and Sweden to NATO “as soon as possible.”
Stoltenberg had suggested the process could move “very quickly” in NATO once this NATO enlargements get it formally approved by all member nation’s parliaments.
