CCP Virus Infection of Hong Kong Officials Cast Uncertainty to new Chief Executive’s Inauguration Ceremony

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) General Secretary Xi Jinping’s rumored visit to Hong Kong attending the city’s 25th anniversary of British handover on July 1st is in doubt after two Hong Kong top officials contracted the CCP virus.

On June 23rd, Hong Kong Government announced that the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai and the incoming Chief Secretary for Administration Chan Kwok-kee tested positive for the CCP virus, and the two officials are currently under quarantine.

Chinese state media reported that Xi Jinping has “deep affection” for Hong Kong as speculation builds that he will travel to the city for handover anniversary celebration.

The Chief executive designate Lee Ka-chiu will take office on July 1st. All previous inauguration ceremonies were attended by Beijing leaders. If Xi does not attend the incoming Chief Executive’s inauguration, it will be the first time since the handover in 1997.

It is not known if Lee Ka-chiu had close contact with the two officials who infected with the CCP virus or when he was last tested for the CCP virus. There was no official response from Lee’s office.
According to reports, an anonymous source said that Beijing was “deeply concerned” about the current situation in Hong Kong. Before the inauguration day, pandemic lockdown and control measures to ensure no infection risk for the CCP leader’s visit the city on July 1st seems to failed.

It is unclear whether this will affect the visit of the CCP leader and the CCP Government has not yet announced who will attend the ceremony.
