The US Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act Comes into Effect on 21 June

According to foreign media reports, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act(UFLPA), which came into effect on June 21, stipulates that the United States will ban imports from China Xinjiang region unless the importer can “prove that the goods were not produced through forced labor,” or the goods will be banned from entering the United States.

This restriction will be extended to all imports. Several members of the U.S. Congress said the law sends a clear message of no more cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), who participated in the abhorrent use of forced labor and commited heinous crimes against humanity. As a result of the UFLPA, starting this Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection(CBP) officials will stop all shipments from Xinjiang into the U.S. ports.

CBP has said it is prepared to implement the law’s “rebuttable presumption” mechanism, which presumes that all goods from Xinjiang involve forced labour unless it can be proven otherwise. However, the threshold required to obtain an exemption is “very high”.In addition, the U.S, UK and other countries have asked the UN’s International Labour Organisation to set up a mission to investigate alleged labour abuses in the Xinjiang region by the CCP regime.
