Zelensky: Africa is a “hostage” to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

According to AFP and other foreign reports, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a speech to the African Union (AU) on June 20th (local time), “Africa is actually a hostage… of those who unleashed war against our state.”

Zelensky also stressed the horror of famine spread across the African continent as Russia’s naval blockade blocked the way for Ukrainian grain exports. He went on to say that while the grain crisis would last as the “colonial war” of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continued, Ukraine would devote all its efforts to opening export ports. He added that Ukraine would build a new logistics supply network for the 25 million tons of grain blocked within its borders.

Zelensky said that he would “intensify” dialogue with the AU’s 55 member states and would soon appoint an African special representative. AU chair and Senegalese President Macky Sall expressed his gratitude to Zelensky on Twitter. Africa “remains committed to respecting the rules of international law, the peaceful resolution of conflict, and the freedom of trade,” he said.
