U.S. Rejects Taiwan Strait as Inland Sea Claimed By The CCP

It is reported on June 18th that the Biden Administration officials decided on Saturday to reject ambiguity over the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s claim that the Taiwan Strait is not “international waters”, fearing it could lead to more frequent provocations by the CCP in the Taiwan Island waters.

The CCP officials have repeatedly made the statement in recent meetings with the U.S., which has brought attention to the U.S. that the CCP intends to block the U.S. political and military influence over democratic countries in the region.

The CCP has long asserted that the Taiwan Strait is part of its exclusive economic zone and believes that the passing of foreign warships should be restricted. When the CCP routinely protested the sailing of U.S. warships, it did not legally contest the United States in the past until Russia invaded Ukraine, and the global security environment drew people’s attention. In February this year, the CCP and Russia signed a mutual support agreement for their territorial security.

At the National Security Conference, President Biden expressed concern over the CCP’s statement that the Taiwan Strait is not international waters, because it is a deliberate attempt by the CCP to mess up the interpretation of relevant laws and turn the Taiwan Strait into an inland sea and take it over.

According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), countries’ inland seas are within 12 nautical miles of their coasts, and the Taiwan Strait is approximately 220 nautical miles wide.
