The CCP Falsely Claims the Taiwan Strait as its Exclusive Economic Zone

Ou Jiangan, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, said on June 14th, 2022, regarding the recent talks between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the United States, it falsely claimed that the Taiwan Strait is a non-international water area and belongs to the CCP’s “Exclusive Economic Zone” (EEZ). In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sternly refuted the CCP’s relevant fallacies, and reiterated that “the Taiwan Strait is an international water, and the waters outside our country’s territorial waters are subject to the ‘freedom of the high seas’ principle of international law.”

Our country has always respected any actions of foreign ships in the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international law, including innocent passage. At the same time, we understand and support the benefits of the U.S. mission of freedom of navigation in promoting regional peace and stability.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs refutes and condemns the Chinese Government’s apparent ambition to ignore our country’s claims, deliberately distort the rules of international law, dwarf the Taiwan Strait as its exclusive economic zone, and then attempt to annex Taiwan.

The CCP’s move will not help reduce regional tensions. Therefore, Taiwan will continue to work closely with like-minded countries to jointly defend the rules-based international order and promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
