South Korea, U.S. Launch 8 Missiles in Response to North Korea’s Provocation

On June 6th, local time, according to South Korean media, the South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that the eight ballistic missiles were fired into the East Sea at 4:45 a.m. on June 6th. It was a show of force in response to the threat of a short-range ballistic missile launched by North Korea on June 5th.

Following North Korea’s provocative launch of three intercontinental ballistic missiles and short-range ballistic missiles during US President Joe Biden’s visit to Japan on May 25th, eight short-range ballistic missiles were launched again from the Sunan area of Pyongyang on June 5th.

According to the media report, the South Korean military launched seven missiles and the US military launched one. In response to North Korea’s frequent ballistic missile launches that threaten the security of the Korean Peninsula, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that South Korea is capable of countering forceful provocations from North Korea and has the ability to immediately strike the source of provocation with precision, and has the ability to command and support forces.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol also said on the 6th that South Korea is prepared for all provocations against North Korea and has a fundamental and substantial security defense capability.
