According to news reports on May 27th, 2022, five patients have been hospitalized in an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in central Sydney, Australia. Nearly 90 percent of people over the age of 16 in New South Wales, Australia have been fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine. Australian health officials are warning people who have visited downtown Sydney in the last 10 days to be aware of their health conditions. In addition, there have been many cases of Legionnaires’ disease in other parts of Sydney.
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease appear within 10 days after exposure to airborne contaminated water particles and behave very similarly to those of the COVID-19 virus. The main symptoms are fever, chills, cough and shortness of breath, and may also lead to serious chest infections such as pneumonia. However, Legionnaires’ disease is not transmitted from person to person.
Legionnaires’ disease is diagnosed by taking chest x-rays and examining urine. Patients are usually treated with antibiotics.
