On May 18, Bob Menendez (D-NY), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Jim Risch (R-OH), the Ranking Member of the Republican Senate, were joined by 50 of their Senate colleagues in penning a letter to President Joe Biden to urge the Administration’s inclusion of Taiwan as a partner in the proposed Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF).
In the joint letter, the senators wrote that the United States must unite all of its allies to make IPEF an effective instrument for facilitating freedom and openness in the Indo-Pacific region. Taiwan is a global supply chain center for electronics, computers, and communications technology as well as an important economic partner for the United States. The inclusion of Taiwan in the IPEF demonstrates the rock-solid commitment of the United States to Taiwan and enhances the effective competitiveness of the United States against the Chinese Communist Party.
It is reported that a bipartisan group of 200 House Representatives have already sent a joint letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to petition for Taiwan’s inclusion in IPEF on March 30.
