On May 10, the United Nations General Assembly passed the Czech supplementary bill with 157 votes and 23 abstentions, deciding to let the Czech Republic replace Russia in the United Nations Human Rights Council. Russia’s term at the United Nations Human Rights Council, which was supposed to last until 2023, was suspended in April due to the invasion of Ukraine. After the Czech supplementary bill is passed, the Czech Republic will complete the remainder of Russia’s term.
On May 12, at the request of dozens of countries, the United Nations Human Rights Council held a special session and passed a resolution overwhelmingly with 33 votes. Two against, ordering the commission of inquiry to investigate the Russian army’s war crimes during the Russian occupation in the surrounding areas of Kyiv, Sumy, and Mariupol. Representatives of the Chinese Communist Party voted against this meeting, changing their previous abstentions on matters related to the Russian-Ukrainian war, and openly standing with Russia.
