Japan, EU Discuss Russia-Ukraine War, Indo-Pacific Security, and Taiwan Strait Stability

On May 12, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, EU Council President Charles Michel, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met in person for the 28th Japan-Europe Summit in Tokyo, and international security was the most important topic of this summit.

Both Japanese and European leaders strongly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its war crimes, and supported the international community’s imposition of financial and trade sanctions on the Russian government and individuals. In addition, both Japan and Europe expressed extreme concern over the Chinese Communist Party’s attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force in the East and South China Seas. Both parties also think that the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues are very important.

At the end of the summit, both sides issued a joint statement.
