European Union Warns Its Member States to Prepare for Supply Cutoffs

Last week, Russia energy company Gazprom cut off the gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria on the grounds of their refusal to pay in Rubles. On May 2, energy ministers of the EU member states held an emergency meeting in Brussels to discuss how to get rid of Russia’s energy dependency. The objective is to deal with the embarrassing situation of Russia cutting off supplies.

At the meeting, representatives reached consensus on moving forward with building gas inventories and seeking more non-Russian sources of supply. After the meeting, the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, said that any member state could be the next to be cut off from natural gas.

Gazprom’s actions in Poland and Bulgaria are a warning to everyone. Therefore, the 27 member states will reserve gas jointly with Poland and Bulgaria to maintain supplies.
