Russia Plans To Deploy Sarmat Intercontinental Nuclear Missiles By Autumn

According to Reuters on Apr 23rd, Russia planned to deploy Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, by autumn.

Russia announced the first test-launch of Sarmat on Wednesday, which is capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads and decoys, and of striking targets thousands of miles away in the U.S. or Europe. Russia said the new intercontinental nuclear missiles would be deployed in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia, about 3,000 km east of Moscow. For the purpose of saving colossal resources and time, Sarmat would be placed in the same silos as the Soviet-era Voyevoda missiles.

The research and development of Sarmat has been delayed for years due to funding and technical issues. Western military experts said notwithstanding Sarmat’s first successful test-launch, more efforts were still needed before the missile could be deployed.
