Taiwan media reported on March 31 that former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in an interview with the Wilson Center, a U.S. think tank, called on the U.S. to scrap its strategic ambiguity over Taiwan and clearly assert a stance in favor of Taipei to Deter CCP.
Abe said that one of its islands Yonaguni is just 110 km from Taiwan, if the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) invades Taiwan, it will seek to gain air control, which will lead to a “significant impact event” as defined in Japan’s Legislation for Peace and Security, it would allow Japan to request logistical support from the U.S. Since Taiwan’s independent status is not currently recognized by most countries in the international community and is not a member of the United Nations, the situation is very different from Ukraine. The U.S. should scrap its current strategic ambiguity and make it clear in advance that if war breaks out in Taiwan Strait, U.S. forces will intervene, and war could be avoided.
Abe believes that although CCP may think that invading Taiwan by force would cause serious damage to its economy, this does not mean that there is no such possibility in the future.
