UN Appoints Norwegian Judge to Lead Investigation Into Russian War Crimes in Ukraine

Human Rights Council President Villegas also appointed Bosnia-Herzegovina human rights ombudsman Zumhur and Colombia’s de Grave, who was the UN’s top expert on truth, justice and reparations, to join the commission of inquiry.

The UN’s top human rights body agreed in a historic vote earlier this month to conduct the highest-level investigation into abuses before and after Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

Thousands have been killed and millions displaced since Russia invaded its pro-Western neighbor. In a resolution voted on March 4, the Security Council strongly condemned the violations caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

The resolution ordered the establishment of an independent international commission of inquiry to investigate all acts of violence committed by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine. It is also reported that the International Criminal Court in The Hague has also opened an investigation into possible war crimes committed by Ukraine.
