This new development will cause worry among those who view communist China as a rogue nation with no regard for anyone but themselves. With the current state of the world, having another nuclear superpower is the last thing that is needed. Having democratic countries using nuclear weapons as a deterrent is one thing, but having a brutal dictatorial regime with a huge nuclear arsenal on a mission to conquer the world is another.
Now is the time for statecraft and diplomacy, but history tells us that some countries are trustworthy and some countries simply are not. Strong, fair, decent governments are what is required to see that these events do not get out of hand. If by having more nuclear weapons mean that there is more of a deterrent then so be it, but if the huge increase of nuclear weapons is going to be used as a threat, then as always is it us “the people” that will pay the ultimate price.
