International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Putin

On March 17, the United Nations’ International Criminal Court (ICC) reportedly issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of committing war crimes in Ukraine. Although Moscow has repeatedly denied allegations of atrocities committed by its army during the invasion of Ukraine last year, UN officials had already reached a conclusion. The ICC arrest warrant named Putin responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation and transfer of population including about 16,221 children from occupied Ukrainian territory to Russia.

It was reported that this is the first UN ICC’s arrest warrant following the investigation into the Ukraine conflict. In addition, the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Russia’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office with the same charges.
