Taiwan Resists Li Keqiang ‘Peaceful Reunification’

According to media reports on March 5th, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang whose premiership is ending in March 2023, reiterated the call for “peaceful reunification” at the opening ceremony of the National People’s Congress. Li called for the implementation of “our Party’s policy to solve the Taiwan issue;” “promotion of peaceful development of relations across the (Taiwan) Strait, and advancing the process of peaceful reunification of China.” He also emphasized the need “to take resolute measures against Taiwan’s independence and to promote reunification.”

In response, Taipei stressed that the Chinese Communist Party should “respect the Taiwanese people’s pledge to uphold the sovereignty, democracy, and freedom of the Republic of China” and urged the CCP to face the reality that neither sides across the Strait don’t belong to each other.
Taiwan’s China-policy making Mainland Affairs Council clearly announced the Taiwanese government’s strong objection to the CCP’s claim which violates Taiwan’s sovereignty. The Council also stated that only the 23 million Taiwanese people can decide their own future!
