U.S., Japan, Australia, India Issue Joint Statement To Counter Threats From Communist China And Russia

On March 3, local time, Japanese media reported that the United States, Japan, Australia, and India held a Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi.

Regarding the current situation in Ukraine, the Quad members issued a joint statement stating that the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible. Although the statement did not name Russia explicitly, the statement said the Quad stressed that “the rules-based international order must respect sovereignty, territorial integrity, transparency, and peaceful resolution of disputes” under the UN Charter. With Communist China’s maritime advances in mind, the statement reiterated the intention to counter challenges to the rules-based order in the East and South China Seas. Japan is the front line against Beijing’s aggression against Taiwan. The Japanese government has gradually let go of its burdens, started to face challenges, and showed a tough stance. Japan Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said “Through quadrilateral cooperation, it is important to be determined not to allow the status quo to be changed by force anywhere.” Analysts believe that as democracies begin to recognize the threat posed by Communist China and Russia, they are beginning to show a tough stance to contain the aggression.
