Japan To Purchase 400 US Tomahawk Missiles

According to Taiwanese media reports, Japan is set to purchase Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States to maintain its “counterstrike capability.” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced for the first time on February 27th at the (Japanese) House of Representatives Budget Committee that the planned purchase size is 400 missiles. Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada also stated that he is coordinating with the United States for Japan to acquire up to 400 missiles. The Japanese government plans to sign a bulk purchase contract with the United States in the fiscal year 2023 for the Tomahawk missiles, which are planned for deployment on the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Aegis destroyers in the years 2026-2027. The Tomahawk cruise missiles that Japan will purchase from the United States this time are the latest version that has been deployed by the US Navy in 2021, with a maximum range of 1600 kilometers. Possessing precision guidance systems, these missiles can avoid interception by enemies and strike ground targets at low altitude.
