Concerns Over Putin’s Withdrawal From The New START Treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia’s suspension of participation in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) during his state of the nation address on the 21st of this month, according to several foreign media reports. In response, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed regret over Russia’s decision. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that Russia’s announcement to withdraw from the treaty was “deeply unfortunate and irresponsible.”

As previously reported, the New START Treaty was signed by the U.S. and Russia in 2010, effective for ten years since Feb. 5, 2011. The treaty is the only arms control treaty between the two countries after the US-Russia Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) expired in 2019. Russia and the US agreed to extend the New START Treaty for another five years by exchange of diplomatic notes on February 3, 2021, and its contents remain unchanged.
