U.S.-India Join Forces Competes With China In AI

Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan and his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, met with senior officials from both countries at the White House on Tuesday to launch the U.S.-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies, according to a Jan. 31 report in foreign media. Earlier to the meeting, President Biden hopes it will help the two countries compete with China in military equipment, semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Washington wants to deploy more Western cell phone networks in the South Asian subcontinent to counterbalance China’s Huawei, welcomes more Indian computer chip-making professionals to the United States, and encourages companies from both countries to cooperate on military equipment such as artillery systems. Some commentators have argued that despite increased cooperation between the U.S. and India in some areas, China’s aggressive military moves and its determination to dominate future industries and control future supply chains has had a profound impact on New Delhi’s way of thinking. This also leaves uncertainty about U.S.-India cooperation due to India’s long-standing dependence on Russia for military equipment and energy supplies.
