Czech President-elect Petr Pavel Spoke By Telephone With President Tsai Ing-wen

According to reports, on January 27th and 28th, Petr Pavel, a military-background politician, claimed victory in the Czech Republic 2023 presidential election. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) expressed her sincere congratulations to President-elect Pavel on behalf of the Government and people of Taiwan in the first hour of his victory on the 28th. President Tsai said she looked forward to continued close cooperation between Taiwan and the Czech Re-public based on shared values, promoting substantive exchanges in various areas and deepening the democratic partnership.

The Czech Republic is an important partner of Taiwan in Europe that share the same universal values. The two countries share the values of freedom, democracy and human rights, and they cooperate closely in economic, trade, technology, culture and education matters. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the two countries have deepened their cooperation in disease prevention and key industries, strengthening the resilience of supply chains, according to the MOFA of Taiwan.

President-elect Pavel thanked Tsai for her congratulations and affirmed that Taiwan and the Czech Republic share the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and the rule of law, stressing that Taiwan is a trustworthy partner and would boost cooperation with Taiwan in all aspects, adding that the Czech Re-public stands firmly on the side of democracy and supports Taiwan in maintaining a lively democratic system free from authoritarian coercion, and would boost cooperation with Tai-wan in all aspects.

The dialogue between Czech president-elect Pavel and President Tsai is a sign of global recognition of Taiwan’s international status.
