On January 26, 2023, after Germany announced its support for Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks, U.S. President Joe Biden followed up and said the U.S. will supply Ukraine with 31 advanced M1 Abrams main battle tanks. After discussions with NATO allies last week, Germany said it would provide Ukraine with the most advanced Leopard 2 tanks, but on the condition that the United States also provide M1 Abrams tanks. Hence, President Biden decided to provide Ukraine with 31 main battle tanks, stating that the world’s most powerful tank would enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its territory, but “There’s no offensive threat to Russia”. President Biden thanked Germany for the decision, noting: “the expectation on the part of Russia is we’re going to break up, we’re not going to stay united. But we are fully, thoroughly, totally united.” 11 months after Russia invaded Ukraine, the United States alone has provided about $50 billion in humanitarian, economic and military aid.
