Japanese Government Confirmed Fukushima Nuclear Plant Wastewater Is Expected To Empty Into The Sea ‘Around Spring Or Summer’

After the explosion of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, nuclear waste water has not yet been treated. In the past, the Japanese government has discussed that it is expected to dilute nuclear wastewater to a concentration below the national standard and empty it into the ocean. On January 13th, the Japanese government officially announced that the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is expected to implement a drainage plan sometime this spring or summer.

In 2011, a massive undersea earthquake triggered a tsunami and the cooling system of the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan was overwhelmed, causing the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Currently, the demolition of the Fukushima nuclear power plant is under way and is expected to take about 40 years.

Between April and November last year, the base produced an average of 100 cubic meters of sewage per day, including groundwater, seawater, and rainwater that seeped into the area, as well as water used for cooling. The water is filtered to remove various radionuclides and stashed in storage tanks. There are already more than 1.3 million cubic meters of storage tanks and the storage space is about to run out.
