On Tuesday, the House voted overwhelmingly to pass a resolution establishing a select committee focusing on U.S. competition with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The resolution passed in a 365 to 65 vote, with 146 Democrats joining Republicans in supporting the measure.
Rep. Mike Gallagher will chair the commission, which will investigate the economic, technological, and security progress and the strategic competition between Beijing and Washington. The committee will be composed of seven Republicans and five Democrats and will have the authority to hold public hearings.
Speaker McCarthy said during a debate on the House floor Tuesday, “I’ve heard my colleagues on both sides say that the threat posed by Communist China is serious. I fully agree. This is an issue that transcends political parties. And creating a select committee on China is our best avenue for addressing it.”
Gallagher said, “The Chinese people are the primary victims of the CCP’s Orwellian techno-totalitarian surveillance state. And so every action we take, I think we need to be cognizant of that distinction, as well as shine a light on the way in which through extraterritorial coercion, the CCP is intimidating the Chinese diaspora population in the United States or even the Asian American population.”
