Twitter’s Layoffs May Violate Canadian Labor Law

The media reported on November 7th that Twitter’s current plan to begin global layoffs without fully complying with the terms of its employment contract may violate Canadian labor-related laws. In order to cut operating costs and implement new company policies, Musk is planning to shed 3700 employees, nearly half of its current personnel. The social media company temporarily closed its offices and suspended most staff’s access to its internal systems after the announcement that it would inform its employees by email whether they were dismissed.

The head of the company’s Canadian operations and the director of public policy for Canada also simultaneously announced their departure from the San Francisco-based tech giant on the same day. In this regard, Canadian lawyers said that Twitter had no right to unilaterally enforce layoffs unless labor and capital have previously included the terms of the layoff in an employment contract. In addition, if an employer fails to give timely notice of a layoff or fails to get adequate severance payment, the employer also violates Canadian labor law.
