The Philippines and the U.S. Launch Naval Exercises Amid Tensions With Communist China

According to reports by media in the Philippines on Monday, October 3rd, the armed forces of the United States and the Philippines launched a two-week joint naval exercise, strengthening a close military alliance amid regional uncertainty over tensions between Washington and Beijing.

KAMANDAG is an acronym for “Cooperation of the warriors of the sea” in Filipino, and is an exercise that will run until October 14th. 2,550 U.S. soldiers and 530 Filipino soldiers will take part in this island exercise involving training for amphibious landings, live ammunition, and humanitarian aid.

U.S. allies such as Japan and South Korea will participate in the exercise as observers. The Philippines and the U.S. have a 70-year-old mutual defense treaty, so drills have been held for decades.
