The Biden Administration Is Yet To Decide On Taiwan’s Military Requirements

According to a report submitted by the Taiwanese Defense Ministry to the Legislative Yuan on October 3rd, the US is assessing the planned arms sales of weapon systems requested by Taiwan.

The Taiwanese Defense Ministry refused to disclose whether the AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile, which is launched from fighter jets and has a range of 370km, would be included in the weapon systems provided to the island but said it would reveal the details later this year.

Su Tzu-yun, the research analyst at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, noted that there was an increasing possibility that the White House would transfer long-range weapons in light of the evil CCP’s growing security threat to the Indo-Pacific region. He added Taiwan should consider the imports of Aegis Combat System-equipped warships, precision-guided munitions, and stealth technologies to effectively strengthen its defense capability.

The report said the military sales included F-16A and F-16B jet performance upgrades, navigation and targeting pods, precision-guided munitions, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, Harpoon coastal defense missile systems, and MQ-9B drones. The report also mentioned that the Taiwanese navy is planning to procure another 9 Tuo-Chiang-class corvettes to achieve the goal of 12 warships of that class by 2026.
