According to a report on August 30th, Google declined Truth Social’s Android app for release because its content review failed to meet the requirements.
Based on previous statements by Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes, the social platform’s Android app was expected to get released this week. However, Google now claims that it rejected the App due to concerns about its content review practices.
Google told the press that “on August 19th, we notified Truth Social of several violations of standard policies in their current app submission and reiterated that having effective systems for moderating user-generated content is a condition of our terms of service for any app to go live on Google Play. Last week, Truth Social wrote back acknowledging our feedback and saying that they are working on addressing these issues.”
In response to Google’s claims, the Truth Social platform said in a press statement, “TMTG (Trump Media Technology Group) has continuously worked in good faith with Google to ensure that the Truth Social Android App complies with Google’s policies without compromising our promise to be a haven for free speech. “
However, the platform also contends that several competitors, such as Facebook and Twitter, “remain in the Google Store despite rampantly violating Google’s prohibition on sexual content and other policies, whereas Truth Social has zero tolerance for sexually explicit content.”
Truth Social’s content review has been an issue in the past, according to the report. The House Oversight and Reform Committee, which submitted a letter on August 19th, requesting information about the company’s content vetting practices, has also investigated other social networks, such as TikTok, Facebook and Parler.
Truth Social advertises itself as a free speech online platform, but researchers say topics such as the Jan. 6th Capitol riots were blocked, the report analyzes. And, the platform has seen more aggressive characters, such as the militant who tried to attack the FBI field office in Cincinnati, signaling the attack through posts on Truth Social just before the attempt.
