Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said the governor of Arizona arrived in Taiwan, the latest in a string of visits by U.S. officials, defying pressure from the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) not to make such trips.
During his three-day visit, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, a Republican, will meet with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen with companies in the semiconductor industry.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chip maker, is building a $12 billion plant in the U.S. state of Arizona.
Taiwan has once again hosted officials from the United States since a delegation led by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island earlier this month, angering Communist China.
Beijing responded to Pelosi’s visit by conducting military drills close to the island, including launching a ballistic missile over Taipei for the first time and cutting off some channels of dialogue with Washington.
CCP claims Taiwan as its territory despite strong opposition from the elected government in Taipei, which rejects Beijing’s claims to sovereignty.
