Recently, many verified high-profile users on GETTR, including Jason Miller, have had to complain to the GETTR management team due to continued harassment by unknown GETTR accounts. A third-party investigation revealed a large number of robotic accounts disguised as fellow fighters of the Whistleblower Movement, following many well-known individuals and harassing them.
Preliminary investigations have revealed a recent spike in the number of robotic accounts registered with GETTR and the emergence of new types of accounts that mimic normal users and target heavily on non-Chinese and verified high-profile users. These registered fake users’ names were in Chinese or contain the Chinese word “follow back”; the registered address was in Hong Kong, Japan, or Taiwan; the posting content was almost the same as the robot manipulation. Initial sampling and screening found the first batch of 2,396 simulated robotic accounts.
In addition, the investigation team reviewed a sample of 412 complaints against robotic accounts recently. The result found that the number of make-up accounts that pretended to be normal fellow fighters was 324, accounting for 78.64%; the number of verified users was 39, accounting for 9.47%; and the number of ordinary users was 49, accounting for 11.89%. According to the above statistics, these who harassed non-Chinese users, especially verified users, were 80% robotic accounts.
An in-depth investigation and data analysis of a large number of robotic accounts are still in progress. A solution will follow.
